PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flame type atomic absorption spectrophotometer in which no wall surface of the chamber is damaged when a backfire phenomenon has occurred in the internal space of the chamber part and the workability of the chamber part has been improved. SOLUTION: The flame type atomic absorption spectrophotometer 1 comprises the chamber part 15 for preparing a mixed sample by atomizing and introducing a measurement sample to a fuel gas and a supporting gas supplied for the internal space of wall surfaces 15a and 15b and a discharge part 31 comprising a discharge pipe 31a capable of discharging the measurement sample which has not been atomized from the internal space of the chamber part 15 and storing a first set quantity V<SB>1</SB>of a liquid and a discharge part 31b capable of discharging a quantity of a liquid exceeding the first set quantity V<SB>1</SB>from the discharge pipe 31a. The thickness d and material of the wall surfaces 15a and 15b are determined on the basis of the volume V<SB>c</SB>of the internal space of the chamber part 15 and a second set quantity V<SB>2</SB>of a liquid discharged from the discharge pipe 31a when a backfire phenomenon has occurred in the internal space of the chamber part 15.
