PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a 4-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-5-methylimidazole compound useful as an antioxidizing agent for the copper surface, a curing agent for an epoxy resin, or an intermediate of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. SOLUTION: The compound is represented by formula (I), which is synthesized by subjecting a halogenated 2',4'-dichloropropiophenone compound halogenated at the second position and an amidine compound to a heating reaction in the presence of a dehydrohalogenating agent in an organic solvent.
