PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress operating point shift and achieve high reliability in a multistage Mach-Zehnder type optical waveguide element and, further, in a multiple Mach-Zehnder type optical waveguide element in which a plurality of Mach-Zehnder type optical waveguides are parallelly arranged. SOLUTION: A first ground electrode 7, a first signal electrode 5, and a second ground electrode 8, which compose a modulating electrode for a first Mach-Zehnder type optical waveguide 3, are formed so as to be bilaterally symmetrical with respect to the center II-II between the two branch optical waveguides 3-1 and 3-2 of the first Mach-Zehnder type optical waveguide. In addition, a second ground electrode 8, a second signal electrode 6, and a second ground electrode 9, which compose a modulating electrode for a second Mach-Zehnder type optical waveguide 4, are formed so as to be bilaterally symmetrical with respect to the center III-III between the two branch optical waveguides 4-1 and 4-2 of the second Mach-Zehnder type optical waveguide 4. Further, the modulating electrodes are disposed so as to be bilaterally symmetrical with respect to the center I-I between the first and second Mach-Zehnder type optical waveguides 3 and 4.
