Intramedullary implants having variable fastener placement are disclosed herein. In an embodiment, an intramedullary implant 550 includes a non-compliant expandable portion 200 having an outer surface 205 and an inner cavity 235, wherein a hardened light-sensitive liquid is contained within the inner cavity of the expandable portion; and at least one fastener 510 penetrating the expandable portion 200 at a first location along the outer surface 205 of the expandable portion 200 and into the inner cavity 235 of the expandable portion 200, wherein the at least one fastener 510 penetrates the expandable portion 200 at a user selected location anywhere along a length of the expandable portion 200, and wherein the at least one fastener 510 penetrates the expandable portion 200 at any angle relative to the expandable portion.
