<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved multi-axis joystick and an accompanying multi-axis optical displacement measurement means. <P>SOLUTION: The displacement measurement means may include one or more light emitters 4 and one or more light detectors 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d, 5e, 5f preferably mounted in a planar hexagonal array. A relative position of an adjacent movable reflector assembly 2 can be measured in six degrees of freedom by variations in detected light intensity. Various ergonomic configurations of six-axis joystick embodiments which can be facilitated by a compact design of a transducer means are disclosed.
