PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome the following problems: a restart process is easily prolonged in a control device for a spark ignition internal combustion engine 10, having a function of performing an automatic stop process and the restart process for the spark ignition internal combustion engine 10 employing a 4-stroke cycle. SOLUTION: Even during the automatic stop process for the internal combustion engine 10, a crank counter as phase information with a 4-stroke as one cycle is updated based on the output of a crank angle sensor 36 as an MRE sensor. When a restart condition is satisfied, fuel injection control is immediately allowed; meanwhile, ignition control is prohibited until the crank counter is evaluated to be highly reliable by comparison with output of cam angle sensors 42a, 42b.
