PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting insert which easily splits cutting chips by bending them, rapidly discharges the split cutting chips, and is excellent in cooling performance of a cutting portion. SOLUTION: A cutting blade portion 2 is formed at a front end in a longitudinal direction of a shaft-like insert body 1. In the cutting blade portion, lateral cutting blades 3 extending in the longitudinal direction, a front cutting blade 4 arranged between the front ends of the lateral cutting blades, and a rectangular rake face 6, are formed. In the rake face, a first recess 11 connected to the central portion of the front cutting blade in a central portion in a width direction is formed, and a second recess 12 connected to the first recess is formed. On the front end side of the first recess, a first positive rake face portion recessed gradually in a thickness direction as it goes from the front end side in the longitudinal direction toward the central side is formed, and on the front end side of the second recess, a second positive rake face portion recessed gradually in the thickness direction as it goes from the front end side in the longitudinal direction toward the central side is formed.
