CAPILLARY MATTRESS AND SUB-IRRIGATION SYSTEM USING SAME

The present invention relates to a capillary mattress for distributing water supplied by ducts to plants growing in pots placed on the same. The mattress comprises an impervious bottom layer and a central portion including a lower layer having a porosity sufficient for ensuring a high water transmissivity and an upper capillary layer having a transmissivity lower than that of the lower layer but a larger capillary height, the water supply ducts extending in the mattress along same so as to be in direct contact with said upper and lower layers of the central portion. The mattress further includes a layer of capillary breakage arranged on the upper layer of the central portion, and a perforated surface film arranged on said capillary breakage layer for letting the water through to the potted plants. The bottom impervious layer and the perforated surface film are bonded at the edges of said mattress in order to ensure sealing at said edges. Due to this structure, the water propagation rate in the mattress is substantially higher than that in existing systems while maintaining the advantages of the mattress capillarity and of the distribution which is uniform at any point thereof.
