Drive mechanism for type-bar and other mechanisms in typewriters

Type-bar machine; power-assisted actions.-A drive mechanism for type-bars 5, Fig. 1, in typewriters having a toothed drive roller 1, the teeth 11 of which engage drive levers 2 on actuation of associated typing or function keys 15 is provided with a partialrevolution clutch mechanism which drives the toothed roller 1 intermittently by one tooth pitch for each key actuation. On depression of the key 15 a selector magnet 9 pivots its armature 7 causing an end 61 of a push-rod 6 to displace pivotally a drive lever 2 to move its projection 21 into the path of the roller tooth 11. Subsequently, a release magnet 52, Fig. 3, is energized whose armature 51 rocks a release pawl 46 out of engagement with a ratchet-wheel 39 causing, via a push-rod 49, a pawl 41 of a partial-revolution clutch mechanism to engage with the teeth 331 of a drive gear 33 fast with a continuously rotating shaft 31 and to displace the toothed roller 1, so that one of its teeth 11 strikes the projection 21 and rocks the type-bar 5 for impression via a lever 3. A spring 48 causes the release pawl 46 to engage the next tooth 391 of the ratchet-wheel 39 which in conjunction with a pawl 45 co-operating with a ratchet-wheel 38 rocks the pawl 41 out of engagement with the teeth 331 thereby arresting the toothed roller 1 on completion of an angular displacement corresponding to one tooth pitch. Adjustment of impact.-The drive lever 2 may be adapted for regulation of the force of the impression individually or collectively.
