[Also in Division H2] In a motor-driven circulating pump assembly of the centrifugal type having an impeller 8 mounted in a housing 1 on an axially-shiftable shaft 9 directly driven by the motor, the inlet side of the pump faces away from the motor towards a single adjustable thrust bearing 15 against which the shaft is pressed by the pressure generated on the outlet side of the impeller during operation, so that adjustment of the thrust bearing alters the axial position of the shaft relative to the impeller housing and thus varies the pump output by varying the leakage gap between the impeller disc 30 and an adjacent wall 31. The thrust bearing 15 may be of any bearing metal or polytetrafluoroethylene. The motor may be an electric induction motor of the canned rotor type shown, or it may be of the commutator-type in which case separate motor and pump shafts are splined together. Passages 22 covered by a mesh 23 permit cooling water to enter the motor housing 19. The end 24 of the housing 19 may be detachable. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the shaft bearing 10 and the central portion of the plate 2 are omitted, and a bearing arranged in the end 24 of the motor housing 19 supports an extension of the shaft 9.
