A filter assembly comprises a length of fibrous filter material 1 which is folded over a length of spacer 2 and then wound together with a further length of spacer 4 to form a roll 7, adjacent windings being fastened together at 5 in leak tight manner and the whole contained in a canister 8 (Fig. 2, not shown), which exerts radial compression on the roll; the spacers 2, 4 are resilient and keep the passages between windings and within the fold open. Fig. 2 shows the roll 7 supported between centre portions (10), (14) on radial ribs (11), (12), (15), (16), fluid flow being axial of canister (8). Fastening 5 may be by a clip or cap of aluminium foil, folded or crimped over adjacent windings, or stitching by metal or glass thread. The core 3 may have flanges (6) and an axial inset to receive one end of the material 1, attached thereto by screws. Spacers 2, 4 may be corrugated aluminium foil, and spacer 4 may be shorter than spacer 2, to allow a few turns of material 1 and spacer 2 only around the core 3 and at the circumference of the roll. Material 1 may be glass filter paper. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 959, 042.</p> |
