Gold plated jewellery is made by forming a non-metallic body moulded in a metal die, treating its surface to make it electrically conductive and electroplating a layer of gold at least 15 microns thick onto the body. The body can be made by injection moulding a polymer (such as ABS) into a die in which is located part of a clasp, whereby the clasp is firmly anchored in the moulded material. Surface treatment can be a chemical treatment or the application of a thin layer of electrically conductive lacquer. The plated layer can be 14 or 1 karat gold. The jewellery can be a bracelet, earring or ring. |
