measurement adapter 1 having a substantially planar member incorporating a microprocessor and a near field communications transmitter with an antenna. A scale 5 is printed on a face of the planar member and means 7, 9, 13, 15 is provided for selecting a chosen value on the scale. The measurement adapter is able to transmit data, including the chosen value on the scale, to a near field communications enabled communications device. One or more buttons 7 may be provided on the planar member and connected with the microprocessor for determining a mode of operation of the adapter. The planar member may be made of disposable material, such as paper and/or plastics. The microprocessor and the near field communications transmitter may form part of an electronics module 3 incorporated into the adapter. The electronics module may comprise from one or more of a memory, an interface for the means for selecting a chosen value and a power source. Printed circuitry 11 may interconnect the electrical components on the adapter. A movable pointer 9 may be the means for selecting a chosen value, the pointer may be slidable. The selecting means may comprise of plurality of buttons, one of which may be actuated to select a chosen value on the scale.
