A fuel cell unit comprises a porous metal substrate coated on one side with a porous layer of nickel aluminide followed by a layer of anion conductive solid oxide electrolyte and then by an oxygen permeable layer of conductive material. The substrate which may be made of roll compacted sintered nickel, perforated nickel, sintered nickel on a perforated base, sintered stainless steel, or stainless steel gauze is the fuel electrode. The layer of nickel aluminide is applied to the substrate by flame spraying. The solid electrolyte layer, which is a mixed oxide of zirconium hafnium, or scandium with calcium, lanthanum, yttrium or scandium, is applied by plasma spraying. The conductive layer is a Group 1B metal or platinum palladium, rhodium, ruthenium or iridium, silver being preferred and is applied by flame spraying, chemical reduction, or vacuum evaporation. If the conductive layer is applied by flame spraying an inorganic support, e.g. oxides of zirconium, zinc or aluminium is mixed with the active metal. A layer of platinum paint may be applied to nickel aluminide.ALSO:A mixed oxide comprising oxides of zirconium, hafnium, or thorium with oxides of calcium, lanthanum, yttrium or scandium is applied by plasma or flame spraying to nickel aluminide which has previously been applied to a metal substrate. A layer of platinum paint may be applied between the mixed oxide and nickel aluminide. |
