A substantially linear, water-insoluble, non-gelled unsaturated polyester resin composition comprises (1) the esterification reaction product of fumaric acid and a polyethylene glycol wherein the glycol has 6 to 26 carbon atoms, said product having an acid number below 30 and (2) a glycol diacrylate which is the reaction product of a glycol selected from polyglycols having 4 to 8 carbon atoms and monoglycols having 2 to 4 carbon atoms and acrylic or methacrylic acid, the amount of component (2 is 10 to 40% by weight based on the total weight of (1) + (2). A polymerizable styrene (3) in an amount varying between 1 and 5% by weight, based upon the total weight of (1), (2) and (3), may be added. The polyester resin composition may be cured to produce a marresistant surface, preferably on a rigid plastic body or sheet.ALSO:A rigid plastic body or sheet is coated with a solution of substantially linear poly (allylmethacrylate), the coated body or sheet is heated to evaporate the solvent and the thus coated body or sheet is then coated with a substantially linear, water-in-soluble, non-gelled unsaturated polyester resin composition comprising (1) the esterification reaction product of fumaric acid and a polyethylene glycol wherein the glycol has 6 to 26 carbon atoms, said product having an acid number below 30 and (2) a glycol diacrylate which is the reaction product of a glycol selected from polyglycols having 4 to 8 carbon atoms and monoglycols having 2 to 4 carbon atoms and acrylic or methacrylic acid, the amount of component (2) being 10 to 40% by weight based upon the total weight of (1) + (2). The unsaturated polyester resin composition coating is then cured to produce a mar-resistance surface on the plastic body or sheet. To components (1) and (2) of the unsaturated polyester resin composition there may be added a polymerizable styrene (3) in an amount of 1 to 5% based on the total weight of (1) + (2) + (3). In the examples a cast sheet of poly(methyl methacrylate) is coated with a solution of poly-(allyl methacrylate) in chloroform, the sheet is warmed to evaporate the chloroform and then a polyester composition comprising triethylene glycol fumarate, tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate and optionally styrene and catalysed with benzoyl and methyl ethyl ketone peroxides and calcium and cobalt napthenates is poured on to the coated sheet and cured. |
