[Also in Division B1] Esterification and transesterification reac tions giving compounds which may be polymerized, for example as described in Specification 1,139,219, may be carried out continuously at 200-290‹ C. at a pressure between 0 and 10 atmospheres by a process comprising mixing the starting materials and feeding the mixture lengthwise through a heated reactor wherein a stronger retaining influence is exerted on the more viscous un-reacted portions of the reaction mixture than on the less viscous reacted portions thereof. There is reference to production of glycol esters for example bis-(2-hydroxyethyl)-terephthalate from dicarboxylic acids or esters. The glycol may be ethylene, butylene, hexamethylene, 1,2-propylene, or hexahydroxylylene glycols. The acid may be terephthalic acid (TPS) optionally mixed with up to 20% of isophthalic, adipic, sebacic or hexahydrophthalic acids. The molar ratio of TPS: ethylene glycol may vary from 1:1 to 1:3. Examples refer to reaction of terephthalic acid and of dimethylterephthalate with ethylene glycol. |
