Each of the opposed electrode walls of the duet of a magnetohydrodynamic generator is in the form of a panel separable from the other walls and including liquid-cooled metal tubes lining the inner surface of the wall, and inlet and outlet headers into which the ends of these tubes extend. Preferably the tubes lining the non-electrode walls are inclined across the width of the duct so that these tubes do not act as local short-circuits for the generated electromotive force. The tubes are rectangular in cross-section and are shaped apart by thin strips of insulating material, and each panel is backed by either a layer of insulating material or a number of transverse insulating bars to transmit the pressure to an outer box structure divided into two compartments forming supply and return ducts for cooling water. The box structures are bolted together at their adjacent edges to form the complete duct. Along the length of the duct, several headers are incorporated in each panel, each header serving a group of tubes. The headers are bolted to the box structure so that any tubeheader group can be removed. Electrical connections to all, or appropriate, tubes in the electrode walls consist of metal tubes secured to the wall tubes in the headers and extending to the exterior; an outflow of cooling water is maintained along them. |
