Molten metal is transferred from a container such as a ladle to an evacuable induction furnace of the submerged resistor type, the inductor unit having a channel both ends of which open into the lower part of the furnace. The metal enters and leaves from the lower part of the furnace and may pass to a continuous casting apparatus. In addition to thorough stirring in the furnace the metal may be controllably heated to the desired pouring temperature.
