A leaf seal 10 for locating between a higher pressure region and a lower pressure region of a rotary machine. The leaf seal comprises a housing having upstream and downstream side-cheeks 30, 32, and an annular array of resilient leaves 20 located there between to form a seal with a rotating component (e.g. a shaft) of the machine. The leaf seal has a radially outer end held in the housing, a radially inner free end, and upstream and downstream edges 21, 22 adjacent to the inner surfaces of the upstream and downstream side-cheeks. One or both of the inner surfaces is frustoconical and angled relative to the radial direction. The leaf edges adjacent to each inner surface define a respective similarly orientated and angled frustocone. The leaf seal may be used in an axial flow turbine or compressor.
