<p>A latex comprises an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of (A) 0-99.25% of a monovinylidene aromatic monomer; (B) 0-99.25% of an aliphatic conjugated diene, (A) + (B) being 80-99.25% of the total monomers; (C) 0.5-10% of a half-ester of an aliphatic diol and an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid; and (D) 0.25-10% of an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid or its salt. (A) may be styrene or a substituted styrene e.g. ar- or a -methyl-, arethyl -, a - ar - dimethyl, ar - ar - dimethyl -, ar - t - butyl -, methoxy -, cyano -, acetyl- or mono- or di-chloro-styrene, or vinyl-naphthalene. (B) may be 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, chloroprene, 2,3 - dimethylbutadiene or 1,3-methyl pentadiene. (C) may be b -hydroxy-(ethyl or propyl) acrylate, 4-hydroxybutyl methacrylate or 5-hydroxypentyl methacrylate. (D) may be fumaric, acrylic, methacrylic, maleic or aconitic acid. The latex may be prepared by polymerizing the monomers in aqueous dispersion at a pH of 2-7 in the presence of a catalyst e.g. potassium persulphate, and of dodecylbenzene sodium sulphonate, or sodium lauryl sulphate, a chain transfer agent e.g. carbon tetrachloride or bromoform, and sodium bicarbonate. The latex may be compounded with a pigment, e.g. clay (kaolin) and protein.ALSO:Paper is coated with a latex composition comprises an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of (A) 0-99.25% of a monovinylidene aromatic monomer, (B) 0-99.25% of an aliphatic conjugated diene, (A) + (B) being 80-99.25% of the total monomers, (C) 0.5-10% of a half-ester of an aliphatic diol and an a , b -ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid and (D) 0.25-10% of an a , b -ethylenically unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid or its salt.
