[Also in Division B3] A method of expanding a tightly-wound reel of strip into a spirally-expanded shape, with gaps between the individual turns comprises placing the tightly-wound reel with one end face on a support equipped with a fixed non-rotating core and expanding the outer turn of the reel until it forms a sufficiently large circle and may be mounted on a rotatable cylindrical outer shell surrounding the support and reel so that, with rotation of the outer shell in the appropriate sense, entraining the leading end of the strip, the turns are successively pulled off the smaller diameter tight reel and form a larger diameter reel, and during the pulling off of the individual turns a force delaying the radial expansion movement is applied by means of which the turns are prevented from resting firmly against the preceding turns. A tightly-wound reel 8 is secured at its inner end to a central core 9 on a baseplate 1 and is supported on a fixed ring 3 and on rings 4, 5, 6 and 7 rotatable on a dished ring 2 rotated by a pinion 11. The outer end of the strip is secured to the inner wall of a cylindrical shell 12 carried by the ring 2 and concentric with the core 9. As the shell 12 rotates, turns are successively detached from the reel 8 and move towards the shell 12. Magnets 14 restrain the expansion of the reel so that a loose coil 8a is formed in the shell 12. The magnets 14 are fed in radially by means operated by rotation of the shell 12 and are vertically adjustable in guides 13. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the magnets are replaced by a cover-plate covering the entire end face of the reel and supported by the shell 12, air displaced by a turn preventing it from resting tightly against the previous turn. A medium heavier than air, e.g. carbon dioxide, may be introduced into the apparatus. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5, a tightly-wound reel 21 is supported on conical rollers, each subdivided into sections 22a, 22b, 22c and with their axes inclined slightly to planes radial to the reel 21. The end sections 22a are rotated by gears 26 meshing with a rotated ring 27 while the sections 22b, 22c are loosely mounted on the idler spindles. An outer shell 34 is supported and rotated by the rollers and guided by rolls 35. |
