In a system for automatically registering two elements driven by a machine, signals produced by timing marks associated with the two elements and a signal dependent on the speed of one of them are combined to produce pulse trains, variations in the number of pulses in which are utilized to correct the registration. In an automatic registration control system for a multi-colour printing machine, marks on two moving elements to be synchronized or corresponding marks printed on the web produce two trains of electric synchronizing pulses. By means of a system of logic circuits and flip-flops the order of occurrence of corresponding pulses in the two trains and the interval between them, representing the sense and magnitude of register deviation, is periodically detected. If the deviation exceeds a predetermined value, separate pulses having a repetition frequency proportional to the speed of the printing machine are applied to increase or decrease, according to the sense of deviation, the datum count of a counter. If the increase or decrease in count exceeds a predetermined value an appropriate motor is started, to correct the deviation, at the end of the measured interval between the synchronizing pulses. During operation of the correcting motor, further pulses from a reference source are applied to restore the counter to its datum count, whereupon the motor is stopped and has operated for a period corresponding to the deviation. In order to alter the position of registration, the count of the main counter may be modified to a predetermined extent at the end of the measured interval, or the synchronizing pulses may be arranged to trigger trains of references pulses one set of which is delayed to a predetermined extent by interposing an auxiliary counter which does not produce an output until a predetermined count is exceeded. |
