The method involves using inert gas provided by an operational process as an extinguishing agent. Gas-extinguishing nozzles (5) are supplied over a valve area (6) by a controller (9). The gas-extinguishing nozzles are attached to a protective area. A part of the inert gas is supplied to the gas-extinguishing nozzles. The part of the inert gas is reduced to control pressure and used as control gas for the valve area. Another part of the inert gas is supplied after pressure reduction of a control unit (10) of the controller. An independent claim is also included for a device for executing a method for operating a fire extinguishing system.
