To provide an air bearing for magnetic tape 14 relative to the guide-drums 17. 18, these are counter-rotated by pulleys 53, 68 so that air is swept in under the tapes at the entry and exit points. The upper drum 18 carries the head 21 and its speed is servo-controlled in normal fashion, while the lower drum 17 may be driven from the tape-capstan motor. The apparatus is otherwise the same as that described in Specification 1,055,139. |
