In a disc brake having a fixed frame 4 carrying a mechanical applying means and guide means for a pair of pads 5 engageable with opposite faces of an axially fixed disc 1, the guide means comprises a pair of projections 9, each of generally cylindrical form with genetrices substantially parallel to the axis of the disc but of non-circular section, the projections engaging apertures 8 of corresponding shape in backing plates 7 to which the pads 5 are secured so as to guide the pads for axial movement while preventing rotation of the pads about the projections, the apertures being positioned such that the drag force resultant acting on the pads when applied to the disc passes through the centre of the aperture in each plate 7. The applying means consists of a pair of levers 6 pivoted on pins 12 integrally formed on frame 4, abutments 13 engaging one end of the levers in the release position. Screws 17 are threaded in the levers and are adjustable to compensate for pad wear by manually rotatable screws 18, each axially fixed with respect to the appropriate lever and co-operating with a pinion formed on the relevant screw 17. The end of each screw 17 adjacent the plate 7 which it engages may be provided with a spring plate 19 (Fig. 6, not shown), having jaws 20 to hold the plate 7 and a central opening formed such as to enable the spring plate to be snapped over the end of the screw 17 and be retained in a groove 17b, thereby providing a resilient pad mounting and release spring. A helical release spring is also provided between the levers 6 in association with a cable operating means. Where two brakes are provided on opposite sides of a casing 3 (Fig. 1, not shown), a single cable 14 may operate both brakes via an intermediate sheath 15a. The frame 4 is detachably secured to the casing 3 by bolts 11 so that on removal of the bolts frame 4 may be moved radially to allow the backing plates 7 to be slid off the ends of the projections 9. |
