1,056,842. Drying webs. SPOONER DRYER & ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 1, 1963 [July 4, 1962], No. 25573/62. Heading F4G. In a hood 156 for accelerating drying of a paper web 152 passing along steam-heated rollers 150, gaseous medium such as air heated and compressed to superatmospheric pressure by a gas turbine 172 is fed into spaces 192 by nozzles 186 thus heating and inducing recirculated gaseous medium not under pressure through mixer-diffusers 190 into a pressure chamber 162 from which the gases issue through nozzles 170 on to the outer surface of the web to give it a thermal shock treatment and inhibit shrinkage. An exhaust outlet 194 is provided. The heat imparted by the gaseous medium under pressure keeps the temperature in the chamber at at least 400‹ F. The turbine 172 may be replaced by a conventional compression or a direct or indirect heat exchanger. The compressed gas may be heated after being mixed with the induced gas.
