Sulphur- and chlorine-containing e.p. additives for lubricants

Lubricating compositions comprise a mineral or synthetic lubricating base oil containing a minor proportion of a sulphur- and chlorine-containing compound obtained by treating an olefinic compound with SOCl2 in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst (see Division C2).ALSO:Sulphur- and chlorine-containing compounds are obtained by reacting an olefinic hydrocarbon or oxygen-containing compound (such as an ester, ether or ketone) with thionyl chloride in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst at 50 DEG C. to - 50 DEG C., using 0.1-10 moles of organic compound per mole of SOCl2 and a molar amount of SOCl2 which is not less than the molar amount of the Friedel-Crafts catalyst. Examples use octene-1 and butyl oleate. The products are suitable as oil additives (see Division C5).
