PURPOSE: A valve timing adjuster is provided to improve the sealing performance and durability of a seal plate and enhance the energy efficiency of an oil pump. CONSTITUTION: A valve timing adjuster comprises a housing member, a cam shaft(2), a vane rotor(9), and a seal plate(50). The housing member is allowed to rotate synchronously with one of a drive shaft and a driven shaft. The housing member comprises a first housing segment(3) receiving the vane rotor and a second housing segment(1) which faces the opening of the first housing segment and covers the end of the vane rotor. The cam shaft is the other one of the drive shaft and the driven shaft that opens and closes one or both of an intake valve and an exhaust valve. The vane rotor is allowed to rotate synchronously with the cam shaft and comprises a plurality of vane parts that are allowed to rotate to the housing member within a certain angular range. The seal plate is maintained between the first and second housing segments.
