The device has a piezo element (1) arranged in a vibration body (6) of a mechanical power transmission device e.g. electromagnetic brake. A control and evaluation unit (7) is connected with the piezo element for determining a switching state of the transmission device such that the piezo element is displaced into mechanical vibrations by the control and evaluation unit to excite the vibration body. The mechanical vibrations of the body are received for estimating the switching state and the control and evaluation unit converts the vibrations of the body. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining a switching state of a mechanical power transmission device.
