The system has an electronic control unit (26) for piloting an primary automatic gear box (1) from a pinion (13) associated to a conical coupler (19) to another pinion (14) associated to another conical coupler (20) by piloting transmissible torques by the couplers from initial time at the beginning of closure of the latter coupler. A torque variation section imposed by the unit to the latter coupler presents a positive derivative on a time interval beginning at the initial time. The value of the derivative is a function of a set point torque and reduction values of the pinions. An independent claim is also included for a method for piloting an automatic gear box.
