PURPOSE: A device for determining power applying to a rudder is provided to improve an automatic steering system and/or a dynamic positioning system of a ship by reducing switching hysteresis. CONSTITUTION: A device for determining power applying to a rudder comprises a processing unit(29) and a measurement apparatus(28). The processing unit determines power applying to a rudder based on the determined physical quantity value of the rudder. The measurement apparatus determines the physical quantity value of the rudder and determines the lift and resistance applying to a spade rudder. The measurement apparatus comprises a unit for transmitting the determined physical quantity value to the processing unit.
