The unit (100) has an alternating current generator (10) provided with a field coil (12), and a field controller (15) assigned to the field coil. A synchronous rectifier (20) is provided with rectifier elements (21) i.e. MOSFETs, and a control device (25) is assigned to one of the rectifier elements. Field current of the field coil is influenced by the field controller in accordance with the control device. A phase signal input (19), a phase signal output (29) and a phase signal channel (30) are provided between the control device and the controller. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a power supply unit.
