A lubricating composition consists essentially of a blend of a major proportion of a mineral or synthetic lubricating base oil and a minor proportion of an oil-soluble metal salt of a phosphosulphurized polymer which is produced by reacting a polymer of 4-methyl pentene-1, having a limiting viscosity number within the range 0.1 to 1.5, that has been prepared by polymerizing the monomer at a temperature within the range 50 DEG to - 120 DEG C. in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, with a phosphorus sulphide, hydrolysing the phosphoro-sulphurized polymer so formed, and neutralizing the acidic hydrolysed product with a hydroxide, oxide, or alkaline reacting salt of an alkaline-earth metal, or aluminium. In an example, 4-methyl pentene-1 is polymerized in n-heptane solution with AlCl3 as the catalyst, and the formed polymer, after precipitation and drying, is heated with P2S5 under nitrogen, a light refined mineral lubricating oil is added, the mixture is refluxed with a mixture of water and phenol and then iso-octane is added and the resulting mixture allowed to settle. The aqueous and phenol layers are removed and the polymer/oil mixture is dissolved in n-heptane and refluxed with Ba(OH)2.
