PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely detect a projection on a traveling metal surface even in an adverse environment. SOLUTION: The projection detector 100 includes a transmitting antenna 23 that emits electromagnetic wave, a receiving antenna 24 that receives reflected electromagnetic wave, and a transmission/reception signal processor 200 for processing transmission signals and reception signals. The transmitting antenna and the receiving antenna have unidirectionality. The receiving antenna is installed in such a manner that it does not catch an electromagnetic wave emitted from the transmitting antenna and reflected by a metal surface 300 while it catches only electromagnetic wave emitted from the transmitting antenna and reflected by a projection 305 on the metal surface.
