The actuator (1) has switch cylinder units (3, 4)for inserting and releasing gear units (I-VII, R) with pressure with respect to switch cylinders (5, 6, 7, 8) arranged opposite to each other, where the gear units lie opposite to a gear lane. The switch cylinder units switch the gear units by a selection cylinder (22) i.e. bidirectionally operated switch cylinder. The switch cylinder units are synchronously connected with the selection cylinder by a connecting rod (21). The cylinder is operated against action of axially effective energy storage.
