PURPOSE: An interpolation detection apparatus and a method thereof are provided to accurately extracting an interpolation domain of a digital synthesis image. CONSTITUTION: A pre-processing unit(11) converts an input image into a gray scale image. The pre-processing unit eliminates the noise of the image by applying a filter. A calculation unit(13) applies a kernel of one or more directions to a noise canceled image. The calculation unit calculates mean value of the obtained induction content. A detection unit(15) determines the interpolation format of the input image from the periodic characteristic of the mean value.
