ENHANCEMENT OF GROWTH IN PLANTS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for enhancing growth of plants, which involves applying a hypersensitive response elicitor polypeptide or protein in a non-infectious form to all or part of a plant or plant seed under conditions effective to enhance growth of the plant or plants produced from the plant seed. SOLUTION: As an alternative to applying a hypersensitive response elicitor polypeptide or protein to plants or plant seeds in order to impart enhanced growth to the plants or to plants grown from the seeds, transgenic plants or plant seeds can be utilized. When utilizing transgenic plants, this involves providing a transgenic plant transformed with a DNA molecule encoding a hypersensitive response elicitor polypeptide or protein and growing the plant under conditions effective to permit that DNA molecule to enhance growth. Alternatively, a transgenic plant seed transformed with a DNA molecule encoding a hypersensitive response elicitor polypeptide or protein can be provided and planted in soil. A plant is then propagated from the planted seed under conditions effective to permit that DNA molecule to enhance growth. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
