The method involves detecting a combustion chamber pressure signal by using pressure sensors. Criteria for evaluation of knocking combustion are derived from the combustion chamber pressure signal. A measure for damping or reinforcing of the combustion chamber pressure signal is determined. The criteria for evaluation of knocking combustion are corrected based on the measure for damping or reinforcing of the combustion chamber pressure signal. The measure is formed depending of ratios of amplitudes of modes of frequency spectrum of the combustion chamber pressure signal.
