<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a utilization situation monitoring method and a utilization situation monitoring apparatus enabling the correct recognition of whether a terminal is utilized while various operations are performed to the terminal. <P>SOLUTION: A terminal device 100 includes: an application monitoring unit 5 for detecting the startup situation of an upper application 6; a power source state monitoring unit 7 for detecting the power source utilization state of the terminal device 100; a lid opening/closing monitoring unit 9 for detecting the shape of the terminal device 100; and a usage state output unit 4 for determining the usage state of the upper application 6 based on the detected startup situation of the upper application 6, the detected power source utilization state of the terminal device 100, and the detected shape of the terminal device 100.
