PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optical fiber which enhances a yield by suppressing bad coating caused by cobs, bubbles, or the like generated at coating the optical fiber with a polyimide resin, and also to provide the optical fiber. SOLUTION: In the method for producing the optical fiber 1 where the polyimide resin is over-coated in three times or more at the outer periphery of a glass fiber 2 and the glass fiber is coated with the three or more layers of the polyimide resin, the polyimide resin of a first layer 3a at a glass fiber 2 side has the same thickness as the layers after a second layer 3b or is thinner than any one layer after at least the second layer 3b and is thicker than 3μm.
