PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economical and high-efficiency storage battery which can be used for an automobile or the like. SOLUTION: A rechargeable battery is provided such that a positive electrode 1 contains lead, a negative electrode 2 contains zinc, and electrolyte is an aqueous solution of an alkali metal sulphate. Upon discharge, lead dioxide is reduced to lead sulphate and zinc is oxidized to zinc oxide. The reactions are reversed when the battery is charged. The cation of the electrolyte is at least any one of lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium and cesium, or may be tetramethyl ammonium. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
