PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease streaks, image blurs, and color shifts in an image forming apparatus. SOLUTION: When the transfer of an image formed by a developer to a recording medium is finished, control means of the image forming apparatus once stops an image carrier. Thereafter, the control means controls a drive source so that the image carrier is driven intermittently N number of times (N is a natural number of 2 or greater). A measuring means measures the amount of rotation of the image carrier, when the image carrier is driven intermittently. On the basis of an amount Cl of the inertial rotation and a target amount D of rotation required to drive the image carrier per one time, a determining means determines an amount Mt of rotation for issuing a stop instruction which is to be used in the subsequent drive; the amount Cl of inertial rotation is measured by the measuring means, until the rotation of the image carrier stops after the amount Ct of drive rotation measured by the measuring means from the start of the drive of the image carrier reaches a prescribed amount Mt of rotation that gives a stop instruction; and consequently, the control means gives stop instruction to the drive source.
