Apparatus and methods for delivering substances to the inner eye. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a handheld injection device having a body including a housing and a chamber adapted to receive a disposable cartridge that contains a liquid substance to be injected, a drive mechanism contained within the housing adapted to drive the fluid substance contained in the cartridge out of the cartridge and into a cannula associated with the cartridge, and a central control unit contained within the housing that controls operation of the drive mechanism.
