<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and properly stretch a skin material on the front face of a back plate without using screws. <P>SOLUTION: The backrest has a back frame and the back plate and mesh-like upholstery 7 is stretched on the front face of the back plate. The back frame has a side frame and a side member of the back plate is coupled to the side frame. An upper fringe member 56 is secured to the upper end fringe of the mesh-like upholstery 7 by sewing or others. Laterally elongate grooves 45, 46 into which the upper fringe member 56 fits from behind are formed in the upper member of the back plate. The upper frame and the upper member overlap only in both the right and left end parts and an upper space 13 is located in the right and left middle part and the vicinity of the same.
