PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-efficiency high-pressure discharge lamp free of mercury, containing a predetermined rare-earth metal halide, and with going out or the like restrained through reduction of inverter surge voltage. SOLUTION: The high-pressure discharge lamp is provided with a translucent air-tight vessel 1, a pair of electrodes 2, and a discharge medium sealed in. The discharge medium contains a first and second metal halide and rare gas, the second metal halide contains at least one of Tm and Ho, and Cs halide with at least one of Tm and Ho contained by 15 mass% or more, the rare gas, in CsI conversion of Cs halide, is to be one selected from 2 atmospheric pressure or more at 6 mass%, 0.2 atmospheric pressure or more at 12 mass%, 0.04 atmospheric pressure or more at 24 mass%, or the rare gas pressure or more corresponding to CsI sealing volume shown by a CsI sealing-in ratio-rare gas pressure curve connecting a CsI sealing-in ratio and rare gas pressure regulated by the above or its extended line at the time of the other number of mass%, and the discharge medium does not essentially contain mercury.
