PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of accurately controlling positional deviation between respective images transferred onto a recording medium and suppressing an increase in cost, and to provide an image forming control method. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a transfer conveying belt which carries and conveys the recording medium so as to pass through a direct transfer position and a secondary transfer position, secondarily transfers the image onto the recording medium through an intermediate transfer belt from a first image carrier, and directly transfers the image onto the recording medium from a second image carrier provided upstream of the secondary transfer position in a conveying direction of the recording medium. The image forming apparatus includes a control means which allows an optical sensor to detect a positional deviation-detecting image transferred from the first image carrier onto the intermediate transfer belt and a positional deviation-detecting image transferred from the second image carrier onto the intermediate transfer belt through the recording medium, and which controls an image forming condition so as to suppress the positional deviation between the respective images based on the detected results by the optical sensor.
