A lighting device provided with a light source-holding function. A backlight device (12) is provided with a cold-cathode tube (18) which serves as the light source and has electrode sections (18b) provided at end sections (18E) of the cold-cathode tube, and also with lamp holders (20) which serves as cover members for covering the end sections (18E) of the cold-cathode tube (18). The lamp holders (20) are provided with light source-pressing sections (25) which protrude toward the center of the cold-cathode tube (18) and press center-side portions (18C) of the cold-cathode tube (18) which are located further toward the center than the electrode sections (18b). The center-side portions (18C) of the cold-cathode tube (18), which are pressed by the light source-pressing sections (25), are adapted to have a temperature which is relatively lower than the temperature of the end sections (18E) to which the electrode sections (18b) are provided.
