PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable electronic apparatus capable of associating images with characters using a simple operation, and to provide a method of controlling the portable electronic apparatus. SOLUTION: The portable electronic apparatus includes a display section 21; a key operation part including keys to which characters and numbers are allocated; and a control section 45 for activating a first application for imaging an object, allocating a function relating to the processing of the first application to the key, activating a second application for executing processing relating to the characters and numbers allocated to the keys when the key is operated, in a state where the image is displayed at the display section 21 and the key is further operated within a predetermined time from the operation, and executing the function relating to the processing of the first application allocated to the key, when the key is not operated further within the predetermined time from the operation.
