The device has an optical sensor (20a) for detection of blood withdrawn from a branch of extracorporeal blood stream in the area of vessel access, and exhibiting sensor medium (22) experiencing optically detectable change, if the medium comes in contact with blood. The optical sensor includes fiber optics or a light barrier i.e. fork light barrier, aligned to the sensor medium to detect the optical change of the sensor medium. The sensor medium includes a fluorescent material and/or a reflector arranged at side of the sensor medium. An independent claim is also included for a device for extracorporeal blood treatment.
