PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus supplying a lubricant to the intermediate transfer body of a copying machine, a facsimile and a printer or the like through a transfer member and securing the amount of lubricant on the intermediate transfer body when a reference toner image is carried, and to provide an adjusting method for the amount of lubricant. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus uses: the transfer member 65 for transferring the toner image on the intermediate transfer body 11 to a recording medium S passing between itself and the intermediate transfer body 11; a lubricant supplying means 81 for supplying the lubricant 82 to the intermediate transfer body 11 through the transfer member 65 by supplying the lubricant 82 to the transfer member 65; and a recording medium passing mode control means 91 for controlling the passing mode of the recording medium S between 57 the intermediate transfer body 11 and the transfer member 65 so that the amount of lubricant on the intermediate transfer body 11 is increased in a portion carrying the reference toner image.
